 الكاتب  هاروكي موراكامي

الرواية تبدأ حين يقرر الفتى ذو الخامسة عشر الهروب من البيت، بسبب علاقته المتردية مع” أبيه”، تمضي رحلة الهرب هذه بالتوازي مع رحلة رجل عجوز يتعرض لحادث فيبدأ رحلته في البحث عن حجر له قوى غريبة.
في رحلته يقابل العجوز المحدود الذكاء عدة شخصيات ، أهمها سائق يترك مهنته ليقرر مساعدته.يعرض الكاتب تفاصيل هذه الشخصية: طفولتها و حاضرها و كيف قرر أن يضحي بعمله ليساعد هذا الرجل الغريب عنه.
تتطور شخصية العجوز طوال الرواية ليصير من رجل روتيني محدود الذكاء إلى رجل له قدرات غريبة و يستطيع ان يسقط اشياء من السماء، و عبر هذا يسعى الى هدفه الذي ابتدأت رحلته بسببه!
الرواية واقعية ميتافيزقية يجتمع بها الواقع بالخيال، لكن خيط الرواية ضعيف و في النهاية تتسائل ماذا يريد الروائي ان يقول….و لهذا فقد تحب الشخصيات و لا تحب الرواية!حبكة الرواية في رأيي ضعيفة و لا أنصح بقرائتها (شخصيا لن أقرأ من جديد للكاتب) نظرا لاحتوائها على مشاهد غير محترمة. و هناك ايضا لعبة دس السم بالعسل بالترويج للانحراف من خلال إحدى شخصيات الرواية.

فيما يلي شرح لعديد من المصطلحات الهندسية المهمة

Trade studies

تقصد بها دراسات سيناريوهات حلول تنافسية لمنتج بأكمله ، أو مكون هام لهذا المنتج ، خلال مرحلة التصميم.

في حين أن بدائل التصميم تتعلق بجزء واحد ، فإن الدراسات التجارية هي بدائل يمتد تأثيرها عبر مجموعة أو منتج بأكمله

Multi representation  التمثيل المتعدد

التمثيل المتعدد هو عندما تستخدم عدة طرق لوصف جزء واحد.

على الرغم من أنالتقنيات الحديثة يمكنها التقاط تمثيلات دقيقة ثلاثية الأبعاد لهندسة الجزء ، إلا أن هذا الشكل الجميل ليس كافيًا لالتقاط كل تعقيد وسلوك الجزء. يصف التمثيل المتعدد ممارسة تحديد العديد من الوثائق التي تصف جزءًا بشكل جماعي. حتى إذا تجاهلنا التمثيلات غير الهندسية ، فإن جزءًا معينًا من المحتمل أن يحتوي على العديد من التمثيلات الهندسية المختلفة التي يمكن أن تتضمن أيًا مما يلي (غير شامل):

نقط العبور او نقط التفتيش 🙂
هي مراحل محددة لقياس تقدم مشروع معين، مثلا ان كان لديك مشروع انتاجي لتسييره، فهناك مراحل مهمة تحدد مدى تقدم المشروع، مثلا اكتمال وثائق التصاميم، تحديد مواعد استلام المواد الاولية…إلخ

لهذا تحدد نقاط تفتيش في وقت مبكر من أجل قياس التقدم

انها أيضا بوابات بإغلاقها تستطيع الانتقال من مرحلة إلى أخرى

 يتم تجميع المنتج الظاهري والتحقق من صحته في هذا الوقت.على سبيل المثال, قد يلزم تلبية عدد من الشروط (على سبيل المثال ، غياب الصدام ، مؤشرات الأداء الرئيسية المستهدفة) حتى يتم الانتهاء من المرحلة رسميًا. يمثل كل معلم تاريخًا فعليًا أو رقم وحدة منتج. فمثلا:

دورة الحياة

Lifecycle

يمر المنتوج بعدة مراحل يتطور بها  (جزء ، منتج ، تجميع …) من التصميم إلى نهاية الاستعمال، ينتقل من تصميم الى اجزاء يجب تصنيعها ثم تركيبها و تجميعها إلى ان يصبح جاهزا فتأتي مرحلة الاستهلاك ثم ما بعد الاستهلاك.هذه المراحل تسمى دورة حياة المنتوج
خلال كل هذه المراحل هناك عدة أشياء يجب تسييرها و التعامل معها، مثل الوثائق التقنية كالتصاميم.

نعم تغير الشيخ سلمان العودة

لأنه رفض أن يكون نسخة مقلدة عن مشايخه،لأنه رفض التفريط في حريته،و اعتبرها ملكا له،ليست ملكا للحاكم أو غيره،ابتدأ الشيخ سلمان سلسة فيديوهات بعد خمس سنين ،من فترة سجنه الأولى،ابتدأها بعنوان نعم أتغير.

كان ذلك منذ عامين تقريبا.

قدم الشيخ في هذه الفيديوهات طريقة جديدة مبتكرة في الوعظ، تكلم بصراحة عن الانسان بداخله،ما يجعل المشاهد لا يملك إلا أن يحترمه أكثر.

تحدث عن الحزن،عن الموت،عن الخوف،عن الضعف،تحدث عن الإنسان. في سلسلتيه:وسم،علمني موسى…..

الان هو معتقل رأي للمرة الثانية، لكن،لسوء حظ السجان الافكار لا يمكن سجنها.

رغم سلطته و قوته،لا يملك السجان أن يحبس الأفكار و لا أن يواجه الفكرة بالفكرة،لهذا يسعى لقمع صاحبها.

ولى رمضان مخلفا فراغا و حزنا كما يليق بعزيز أن يفعل،

اليوم يعود كل إلى وحدته،المختبئون في البيوت،الخائفون من الحياة،الحزانى،الضائعون،قد كانت المساجد تجمعهم و تخفف عنهم،قد كان الانشغال بالصلاة يسليهم و يفرج عنهم، و اليوم،تعود الأم إلى وحدتها، ،يعود الجميع الى انتظار مرور الأيام، انها يا صديقتي، إنها حقا تمر، و ينتهي معها رصيدنا من الحياة، إنها لا تعود.

لكنه يعود،رمضان يعود فيؤنس و يفرح و يملأ الليالي بالذكر و الصلاة.

فرفقا بمن دخل المسجد ثم انقطع،رفقا بالقلوب المكسورة،بالعيون الحزينة،لعل رمضان القادم إن أدركنا ، عن ذكر ربنا لا ننقطع.

في وداع صلاة التراويح

إلى اللقاء يا رحلة إلى السماء.

هناك حيث وقفنا نصلي فيخشع منا القلب أحيانا فندمع،هناك في سجودنا تسقط الأقنعة،و يشكو كل منا و يضرع،و هل لنا إلا ربنا نشكو إليه و نضرع!

نستحيي منه ربنا كيف عصيناه و نفزع،و نفر إليه و إياه نرجو و نسأل: إياه نسأل استقامة النفس و الأحوال و إياه نشكو ضعف النفس و جور الأوطان.

نحن الأيتام في مأدبة اللئام!

هناك في صلاة التراويح دعاء الأمهات،يدعين بكل الحنان و الألم دعوات رأيت من خلالها حنان الأعوام و خيبات السنين.

هناك في صلاة التراويح تضج القلوب و الحناجر،و تختزل المسافة بين الأرض و السماء.

كان الليل أجمل الأصدقاء،و سكينته يحييها و يحيينا صوت الإمام:حي على الفلاح.كم نحن أغبياء،حين نغفل أن للسعادة بابا في سجدة الليل يفتح.

متشردا بين باريس و لندن ،أن تواجه البؤس

 لا بد أنك مثلي، مررت بمتشرد عدة مرات، و لعلك مثلي لا تعرف قسمات وجهه،بل ربما لم تنظر مرة إليه، منعك الخوف ربما، لكن لم تفكر يوما ما إحساس ذلك الإنسان تجاه هذا التجاهل المقصود أو غير المقصود، أن يمر بك الناس و كأنك غير موجود،أن يتفادوك خوفا أو احتقارا.إحساس يصفه و حياة يؤرخها كاتب فريد من نوعه :جورج اوريول.

الكاتب الكبير  صاحب رواية 1984  و التي يقال أن تشرشل قرأها مرتين أو ثلاث،لا أذكر في الحقيقة، و صاحب رواية مزرعة الحيوان ،التي يقال أنها انتقاد لاستالين . مقالاته و كتبه جعلته من أبرز الكتاب السياسيين. فمن يخطر على باله و هو ينظر إلى متشرد أنه يرى كاتبا كبيرا من حجم جورج اوريول.

يعرف عن الكاتب أسلوبه البسيط الذي يصل إلى غالبية الناس،و يقال أنه اعتكف في جزيرة حتى أخرج تحفته السياسية إلى الوجود:1984 .فما هي ظروف كتابته لأولى رواياته:متشردا بين باريس و لندن؟

لقد كان فعلا متشردا!

متشردا في دروب باريس،يعد نقوده المتناقصة يوما بعد يوم،تزداد وطئة الفقر عليه،فيضطر لبيع حقيبته و ملابسه،يغير نزله إلى نزل آخر أرخص و  أحقر،ثم يبحث عن عسكري روسي متقاعد عله يساعده على ايجاد عمل لكن،كما يقال استغاث غريق بغريق،لقد كان صاحبه احوج منه إلى العون،تمر الأيام يكافحان فيها الجوع ،و تنتهي رحلات بحث عديدة بلا جدوى و بجسد منهك من الجوع و المشي،إلى أن يجد أخيرا عملا كغاسل صحون في أحد فنادق باريس الفاخرة ،و هذا لا يعني رقي المطبخ حيث يعمل صاحبنا،فهو قبو تحت الارض لا يرتفع طوله عن طول الرجل و لا تصله الشمس.يبدأ العمل عند الفجر و يغادره للنوم ليلا.

يحكي جورج اوريول في روايته و هي سيرته الذاتية #متشردا بين باريس و لندن# كيف لاصق البؤس و كيف عاش في ثياب المتشردين،يصف نظرة الناس،خوفهم منه مع أنه كان في أضعف أحواله غير قادر أن يؤذي ذبابة.

المتشرد يا سادة في هذه الرواية/السيرة أضعف الناس أركانا و ليس كما توحيه الصورة النمطية أنه الرجل الذي يحمل سكينا و يترصد ضحيته.هكذا كسر جورج اوريول هذه الصورة النمطية عن أصحاب الاسمال المتسخة البالية.

لقد كان واحدا من أعظم الكتاب السياسين لكنه عاش فترة من حياته متشردا في ثياب متسخة و بمعدة خاوية!

كما كسر أيضا صورة مدينة الأنوار النمطية من خلال وصف المطبخ الذي عمل به،مرورا بالحانة،شجارات الازواج و السكارى، و انتهاء بالاحياء و المهاجرين.و قد نال الفرنسيون نصيبا من نقد الكاتب الانجليزي.

وجد الرجل أخيرا عملا في فندق،و لأن عمل الانسان يلتصق به كما تلتصق به صفاته فقد قدم الكاتب تحليلا نفسيا لشخصية الطباخ ،للكرسون ،و لغاسل الأواني .

يتسائل جورج اوريول عن جدوى بعض الأعمال و هل تستحق أن يمضي الانسان عمره بها؟هل لها أية قيمة مضافة؟أو أي مبرر فعلي للوجود؟

لجورح اوريول نظرته الخاصة و تحليله لقيمة العمل يصفها بدقة و يقدم برهانه على وجهة نظره، و هي نظرة جديرة بالاهتمام و التأمل.

انتهت حياة بؤسه في باريس،فانتقل إلى لندن و كان عليه أن يعيش هناك في ملاجئ للمتشردين.

استلم صدقات من كنيسة كانت تجبرهم مقابل عطاياها على الاستماع للترانيم،يصف نفسيته و زملاؤه كيف كانوا يكنون البغض لتلك السيدة التي كانت مسؤولة بالكنيسة و كيف اصبحوا يبتكرون الطرق حتى يفلتوا من هذا الاستماع الإجباري.

 قابل بالملجئ رسام شوارع،مدمنين و اصنافا اخرى من البشر.

في النهاية  استلم عمله و أنهى فترة تشرده الظرفية ثم كتب  روايته الاولى: متشردا بين باريس و لندن.

إننا ندمر الكلمات،إننا نسلخ اللغة

ذات مساء من أيامي العادية جدا،التقيت شخصا غير عادي البتة،اسمه سايم.

-أنت لا تدركين روعة تدمير الكلمات. هكذا إبتدأني سايم بالخطاب.

ألم اقل لكم إنه شخص غير عادي، عادة ما يبتدأ الناس خطاباتهم عن حالة الطقس،يتذمرون من روتينهم ،يحللون كل شيء و أي شيء، يتحدثون عن ضراوة الدوري الانجليزي، عن الاثارة في مباراةتوتنهام و  السيتي ، عن أسعار الاعبين و البنزين و الطماطم، عن رؤسائهم البغيضين في العمل، و لكن أن يعرب أحدهم عن امتنانه لتدمير الكلمات فهذا شيء لم يسبق سماعه.أجبته:

-تدمير الكلمات،ها،هذا شيئ مستحيل!  إنك واسع الخيال،لماذا لا تعمل لدى متنجي أفلام الخيال العلمي؟.

ابتسم سايم و أجابني:

-بلى يمكنني ذلك،بل هذا هو لب عملي،إننا نصدر قواميس جديدة بها عدد أقل من الكلمات، و هكذا تتناقص الكلمات شيئا فشيئا،إننا نسلخ اللغة.

-لا يمكنك سلخ اللغة ،ستظل الكتب موجودة تحفظ نصوص الأقدمين ،ألا ترى أننا نقرأ قصائد من العصر الجاهلي؟!.

-الكتب عامل مهم ،لا يمكن نكرانه،لكنه ضلع واحد من مثلث:لغة ،كتب و ذاكرة.نحن ننشئ جيلا جديدا لا تعرف ذاكرته إلا اللغة الجديدة،و لهذا فلن يكون قادرا عل فهم “الكتب القديمة”،بما فيها قصائدك الجاهلية.ما رأيك أن نجرب أن نسأل أحد التلاميذ عن معنى :مكر مفر مقبل مدبر معا ،كجلمود ضخر حطه السيل من عل.

-المعلقات؟ أنا أيضا لا افهمها كلها، لهذا توجد القواميس.

-أنسيت بهذه السرعة !إننا نصدر قواميس جديدة فيها عدد أقل من الكلمات.بهذا لن يعود بالامكان فهم الكتب القديمة.

-إننا نتحدث هنا ثقافة الاف السنين يا سايم، تريد محوها كأنها لم تكن!  ماالغاية وراء كل هذا ؟لماذا تريد تدمير الذاكرة؟

هرولت أبحث في المقررات الدراسية ما يطمئن بالي و يدحض حجج سايم،  قلت لنفسي بالتأكيد لازال النشء يحفظ قصائد أحمد شوقي،يترنم بالديك الذي فطن إلى مكر الثعلب حين أتاه في ثياب الواعظين،لا بد أنني سأجد مقامات الحريري، مبارزات الفرزدق و جرير،هجاء الحطيئة،زهد أبي العتاهية،حكم ابن عطاء الله،  ذهبت أبحث بين الصفحات عن بردة كعب بن زهير حين جاء رسول الله معتذرا،عن خطب سيدنا علي، واعظا،موبخا و محفزا،منيت نفسي بلطائف البلغاء،بأمثال العرب بقصائد المدح و الهجاء،رفعت سقف توقعاتي و ما دريت بحجم صدمتي،حين اصطدمت بصخور  نصوص ركيكة الاسلوب،ضعيفة البناء،فقيرة الكلمات،غابت عنها جمالية الادباء و غادرتها محسنات البلغاء،يختلط بها الدارج في أحيان كثيرة،صرخت ما هذا!فأجابني سايم و بسمة الانتصار في وجهه:إنها اللغة الجديدة.

نسيت أن أخبركم عن سايم، إنه في الحقيقة شخصية من خيال جورج أوريول في روايته 1984.في الرواية يمنع تداول كلمات اللغة القديمة، أي كلما أصدر سايم و زملاؤه قاموسا جديدا فعلى الجميع الالتزام به و استعمال كلماته فقط،يحوي كل قاموس جديد كلمات أقل. في الرواية يعد التفكير جريمة، و بهذه الطريقة يمنع سايم و زملاؤه وقوع هذه الجريمة.

رغم ولائه الشديد،سيتم اعتقال سايم،سيختفي و يتم محوه بدوره من الذاكرة.”إنه ذكي و يطرح الاسئلة، سوف يتم اعتقاله،أرى ذلك مكتوبا على جبينه”،هكذا كانت كلمات بطل الرواية متحدثا عنه.

Jose Mourinho has been dismissed as manager of Manchester United.

That moment in 2004 when he joined Chelsea and called himself “the special one seems a long way off.

Three premierships, and I won more premierships alone
than the other 19 managers together. Three for me, and two for them. Respect, respect, respect, man.

His arrogance when winning and grumpiness when losing mean he won’t be missed by many, but as the football coaches say, let’s take away some positives.

What are the leadership lessons from Mourinho’s decline and fall?

Successful leadership in sport or in business depends on four things.

Most of them have to go right most of the time, and at least three of them went wrong at Manchester United under Mourinho.

First, performance.

United had slipped down the Premier League table and may even struggle to make the top four. Business gurus may urge innovators and leaders to embrace failure, but that is not the sort of hug any football manager, let alone football fan, welcomes.

Second, mindset.

As leader, you’re responsible for ensuring that your team thinks positively.

Mourinho’s critics would say he’s a negative manager,

but if your negative approach infects your team, you will struggle to
motivate them to new heights.

Third, confidence.


Not just confidence about winning, but the confidence your team and your bosses show in your leadership.

Mourinho lost the dressing room, as the saying goes, but more to the point, he also lost the support of United’s owners, who were second-guessing him on, for instance, the players he wanted to sign.

And finally, culture.

Manchester United have one of the strongest cultures in world football.

It’s hard to destroy that, and whoever takes over from Mourinho will
at least have that to build on. But relying on culture alone when performance, mindset, and confidence have all disintegrated is like trying to win a football match when your three forwards have been sent off. And at that point, it’s the coach who needs to leave the pitch.

He had to move to a bug-infested hotel, sell his suit and coat, looked for a russian ex-army capitain, live alongside tramps and wash dishes from moring to night.

He’s George Orwell, the english novelist writer, the man with the concept of “big brother is watching you”

In his biography” Down and Out in Paris and London” he narrated his journey story in Paris and London, jobless and homeless; He walked starving, facing ignorance from some people  and fear from others.

Hey, french people! he’s a genius political writer, we know that, you don’t know yet! you are still living  in the 1930 year.

He desribed his inner feeling facing hungry and poverty, at this zero distance from misery he had nothing to worry about!

Strange feeling right? although, this is real, we worry when we have something to lose, he has nothing to lose.

He described the dark side of Paris, the dirty quarters, the drunks, the insults, how peolple was working all the day, drinking all the night.

After a long days of search, he got a job in a big hotel as a diswasher.

In a big hotel, yes, but in a small inderground kitchen.

He analyzed his coleagues’s personality for example the baker as he’s the chief, the manner he managed the work, his insults and temper.

He discussed the added value of some jobs: despite they are hard and time consuming , there was no justified need or a real added value.

After that he moved to London where he lived in a doss house, alongside tramps, a star gazing artist and other kind of marginalized human bieng. 

George orwell is a journalist and writter, had a literary criticism and social injustice awerness.

Portraying a character
The way you present a character is at least as important as where you get the
character. Fleshing out your characters in various ways may take up most of the
story. So if you learn how to make your characters act on a stage, in your setting,
you’ll certainly be able to write stories. In this section you’ll find a variety of ways to
portray a character.
Summary
You can tell us outright what your fictional characters are like and what they do. If
you answered the questionnaire at the end of the previous section, you have a rough
character summary. Link the character traits that strike you as the most important
ones, and you’ll have a complete character summary. Here’s a classic summary
from Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes:
This gentleman, in the times when he had nothing to do – as was the case for
most of the year – gave himself up to the reading of books of knight errantry;
which he loved and enjoyed so much that he almost entirely forgot his hunting,
and even the care of his estate.
He so buried himself in his books that the spent the nights reading from
twilight till daybreak and the days from dawn till dark; and so from little sleep
and much reading, his brain dried up and he lost his wits.
Cervantes goes on with the summary for several pages, but I think this excerpt gives
you an idea of how summary works. We find out Don Quixote’s work and leisure
habits, hobbies and passions, and the consequences of pursuing these – his
obsession with books results in his illness, madness.
The advantage of this method is its simplicity and readability: The writer quickly
focuses on the main character’s conflict and supplies the background we need to
know. You clearly set up expectations for what follows if you use this method in or
near the beginning of your story. Unless you botch the summary, your reader will
easily understand what the main character traits and conflicts are about.

The disadvantage to this method is that you are bound to tell rather then show what
your character is like – this method makes it hard to see and hear the character.
While the summary goes on, no dramatic action, no dialogue, takes place. We are
waiting. Still, the character summary is often worth risking; after you orient the reader
clearly and quickly, you will not need to stall the dramatic action (in order to supply
the background) once it begins to take place.
Here’s another example of how summary works, from The Sun Also Rises by Ernest
Hemingway. See how quickly we learn the character’s main concerns:
Robert Cohn was once middleweight boxing champion of Princeton. Do not
think that I am very much impressed by that as a boxing title, but it meant a lot
to Cohn. He cared nothing for boxing, in fact he disliked it, but he learned it
painfully and thoroughly to counteract the feeling of inferiority and shyness he
had felt on being treated as a Jew at Princeton. There was a certain inner
comfort in knowing he could knock down anybody who was snooty to him,
although, being very shy and a thoroughly nice boy, he never fought except in
the gym.
This is the opening of the novel. There’s no scene for us to visualize, but we receive
the basic outline of the character’s psychology and motivation. Later, we’ll hear the
character speak, see him act, but for now, we have some guiding ideas about him
(and the novel), which will help us understand what follows.
If this approach strikes you as too much ‘telling,’ try to show all the information in a
dramatic scene, and you’ll realize that you’ll need at least several pages to do it.
Since the action Hemingway is concerned with is not in the past but in the dramatic
present (which will follow), to go back into the past dramatically would dissipate the
novel’s focus. The summary gives us the relevant aspects of the past, so we can
stick with the dramatic present. While it’s not the most graceful method, it’s certainly
useful.
Repeated action or habit
This is the most common notion of character – the expectation of how a person will
behave in a given situation, based on the observation that she has behaved like that
many times, that she has the habit. This may be an effective way of describing a
person when you don’t have the time to go into the scenes to show us how she
behaves. Here’s an example from ‘Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?’
by Joyce Carol Oates:
She was fifteen and she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck
to glance into mirrors or checking other people’s faces to make sure her own
was all right.
Now we know that in many situations the girl behaves this way. It would take an
awful lot of time to show this habit dramatically. If the sole point of the scenes were to show her habit, the scenes would be a strain on the reader. Describing it in a
summary will save you time. That’s the advantage. The disadvantage is that doing
this will delay your entry into your main dramatic scenes, where the story takes
place.
Self-portrait
The writer may let the character introduce himself to us. Again, this usually will be a
summary of the basic concerns, at least in the beginning. Notice that a self-portrait
can be achieved indirectly, as Hemingway’s narrator does in the example of
character summary from The Sun Also Rises. The narrator says, ‘Do not think that I
am very much impressed by that as a boxing title, but it meant a lot to Cohn.’ In this
sentence we notice a certain sense of superiority, perhaps arrogance, on the part of
the narrator. When he characterizes Robert Cohn as ‘very shy and a thoroughly nice
boy,’ we hear the narrator’s voice. Who would speak of a twenty-year old as a
‘thoroughly nice boy’? We begin to surmise inferences about the narrator. The
narrator’s summary gives us an explicit portrait of Robert Cohn and an implied and
indirect self-portrait. Good economy.
Here’s a direct self-portrait by the narrator of Notes From Underground by Fyodor
Dostoyevsky:
I am a sick man … I am a spiteful man. I am an ugly man. I believe my liver is
diseased. However, I know nothing at all about my disease, and do not know
for certain what ails me. I don’t consult a doctor for it, and never have, though I
have a respect for medicine and doctors. Besides, I am extremely superstitious,
sufficiently so to respect medicine, anyway (I am well-educated enough not to
be superstitious, but I am superstitious). No, I refuse to consult a doctor from
spite … My liver is bad, well – let it get worse!
Here, the advantage over the third-person summary is that the way sentences are
put together, the way of thought, is our picture of the character just as much as the
content of the thoughts. The Underground Man thinks in paradoxes, spitefully, in
intentional self-contradictions. He certainly prepares us for the humorous and self–
destructive acts to follow, so the disadvantages of this method, that it is not dramatic
and that it does not create pictures, are not significant.
Appearance
Image is not everything, but it does account for a lot. Through how a person looks,
you may try to infer what the person is like – but appearances may be deceptive.
Still, to suggest the person’s character, you may select and interpret details, to guide
the reader’s expectations.
George Eliot uses this approach in the following paragraph from Middlemarch:

Miss Brooke had that kind of beauty which seems to be thrown into relief by
poor dress. Her hand and wrist were so finely formed that she could wear
sleeves not less bare of style than those in which the blessed Virgin appeared
to Italian painters; and her profile as well as her stature and bearing seemed to
gain the more dignity from her plain garments, which by the side of provincial
fashion gave her the impressiveness of a fine quotation from the Bible – or from
one of our elder poets – in a paragraph of today’s newspaper.
Eliot draws a portrait of a Victorian lady who drives the modesty of her dress to such
an extreme that we are alerted by it. Immediately after this, Eliot gives us an inkling
of how to interpret the appearance. ‘She was usually spoken of as being remarkably
clever, but with the addition that her sister Celia had more common sense.’ Miss
Brooke is so ascetic that she creates problems for herself; she imprisons herself in a
sterile marriage to a priestly scholar. Her appearance points in the direction of the
key conflict of the novel.
Eliot’s description works like a painting, in which the surface details suggest
character and mood. Sometimes the appearance of a character can indeed attain
the quality of a good drawing, a cameo, as in the following example from ‘Patriotism,’
by the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima:
For the beauty of the bride in her white over-robe no comparisons were
adequate. In the eyes, round beneath soft brows, the slender, finely shaped
nose, and in the full lips, there was both sensuousness and refinement. One
hand, emerging shyly from a sleeve of the over-robe, held a fan, and the tips of
the fingers, clustering delicately, were like the bud of a moonflower.
Notice how, in the two above examples, the authors draw the hands more
successfully than the faces. While hands are often more difficult than faces to render
in paintings, in writing it’s the reverse, because writing can capture motion and
activity better than painting can. Hands can do more than faces can – unless we are
mimes, and even with mimes, hands are at least as active as faces. In describing
faces, it’s easy to resort to smiles and frowns, and difficult to strike a fresh image.
With hands, you can play with a large array of possibilities.
You can characterize someone even by his feet or his walk, as does Thomas Hardy
in The Mayor of Casterbridge:
His measured, springless walk was the walk of the skilled countryman as
distinct from the desultory shamble of the general labourer; while in the turn
and plant of each foot there was, further, a dogged and cynical indifference
personal to himself.
No matter how you describe a character’s appearance, your reader must be able to
see it. If you rely on an adjective and give us little besides, you will probably fail to 

make us visualize anything. In his novel The Citadel, British author A.J. Cronin
makes this mistake and gives us an example of what not to do:
Late one October afternoon in the year 1921, a shabby young man gazed with
fixed intensity through the window of a third-class compartment in the almost
empty train labouring up the Penowell valley from Swansea.
This is the opening line from the novel. It accomplishes a lot in terms of setting, but
the adjective shabby adds nothing. Judging from our being in a third-class
compartment, we would get the notion of shabbiness anyhow, and shabby does not
in any way give us the look of the man. The Citadel is an excellent novel, and it’s
good to see that not everything needs to be perfect for a novel to succeed. If you
don’t want to describe appearance, perhaps you can get away with it — but then
don’t pretend that you are depicting. Scratch out the shabby.
Scene
In a scene you set your character in motion. Especially if she’s speaking, you can
show us the character in action, without needing to summarize and generalize,
although you may supplement the scene with a summary.
Christopher Isherwood in ‘Sally Bowles’ draws a character portrait in a scene with
dialogue:
‘Am I terribly late, Fritz darling?’
‘Only half or an hour, I suppose,’ Fritz drawled beaming with proprietary
pleasure. ‘May I introduce Mr. Isherwood – Miss Bowles? Mr. Isherwood is
commonly known as Chris.’
‘I’m not,’ I said. ‘Fritz is about the only person who’s ever called me Chris
in my life.’
Sally laughed. She was dressed in black silk, with a small cape over her
shoulders and a little cap like a page-boy’s stuck jauntily on one side of her
head:
‘Do you mind if I use your telephone, sweet?’
‘Sure. Go right ahead.’ Fritz caught my eye. ‘Come into the other room,
Chris.’
‘For heaven’s sake, don’t leave me alone with this man!’ she exclaimed.
‘Or he’ll seduce me down the telephone. He’s most terribly passionate.’
As she dialed the number, I noticed that her fingernails were painted
emerald green, a colour unfortunately chosen, for it called attention to her
hands, which were much stained by cigarette-smoking and as dirty as a little
girl’s.
Here we meet the character through her voice, appearance, action, as though in a
theater, and certainly, she is theatrical. She says, ‘He’s most terribly passionate.

This string of three adjectives is a kind of sophisticated excess that achieves a
theatrical sound, as though we were listening to an ironic actor. Isherwood guides us
to interpret the details, to see the little girl behind the sophisticated guise. The hands
are as dirty as a little girl’s. Emerald green for fingernail paint seems gaudy and
excessive; in her attempt to appear sophisticated, she fails, but achieves a charm,
especially through her flirtatious talk: ‘He’ll seduce me down the telephone.’ The
advantage of introducing a character in a scene is that we hear the character’s voice
and diction, and we see the person. So when the narrator analyzes this character, he
does not do it abstractly, but in conjunction with what we have seen and
experienced. The scene combines appearance, action and dialogue; it’s a highly
versatile approach. The drawback is that you can’t supply the background easily
without stalling a scene. Sometimes you can introduce a character through action, so
we begin to see her without needing much dialogue, as does Bobbie Ann Mason in
‘Shiloh’:
Leroy Moffitt’s wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals. She lifts three￾pound dumbbells to warm up, then progresses to a twenty-pound barbell.
Standing with her legs apart, she reminds Leroy of Wonder Woman. ‘I’d give
anything if I could just get these muscles to where they’re real hard,’ says
Norma Jean. ‘Feel this arm. It’s not as hard as the other one.’
The advantage of this method is that the reader is immediately with you, visualizing,
experiencing a scene. You can show and suggest what you could have told us about
– such as that Norma Jean is a fitness nut, a bodybuilder, a self-obsessed person.
The scene implies all this information without completely committing such a blatant
interpretation, so it’s less judgmental than a summary to this effect would be. (This is
most lifelike. We watch how people behave, we never see abstract qualities such as
self-obsession – we merely see the signs, symptoms, which we interpret.) The
author leaves the opportunity of judgment to the reader. Whenever you can, show
character traits acted out in scenes. If you are interested in directly judging your
characters, of course, rely on summaries and interpretations. (Judgment does have
its virtues – it’s abstract, possibly philosophical.) The disadvantage to the scenic
characterization method is that it’s awkward to construct scenes that are outside of
the main time frame of the story, unless you do flashbacks and memories. There’s a
limit to how many flashbacks you can handle without destroying the flow of the story.
And there’s a limit to how many things you can show, anyhow. Thus, although
scenes are probably the most attractive method of characterization, you probably
need to resort to summaries of relevant character deeds and inclinations outside of
the story’s time frame.
Combining techniques
Most developed character descriptions combine two or more approaches. During the
course of a novel, we see a character in the ways the author chooses for us. That,

too is lifelike – you hardly ever experience all the aspects of a friend right away. It
takes time – different situations, communications, perceptions, and thoughts.
In Flannery O’Connor’s [story], we see three approaches: habit, summary and
appearance.
The alarm on the clock did not work but he was not dependent on any
mechanical means to awaken him. Sixty years had not dulled his responses;
his physical reactions, like his moral ones, were guided by his will and strong
character, and these could be seen plainly in his features. He had a long tube￾like face with a long rounded open jaw and a long depressed nose. His eyes
were alert but quiet, and in the miraculous moonlight they had a look of
composure and of ancient wisdom as if they belonged to one of the great
guides of men.
‘Strong character’ is an abstract summary. ‘A long tube-like face’ is a caricature,
appearance. ‘He was not dependent on any mechanical means to awaken him’ is a
habit summary. These traits give us a quick synopsis of this man, which lead us into
a scene, where we observe him in action.
Mr. Head went to the stove and brought the meat to the table in the skillet. ‘It’s
no hurry,’ he said. ‘You’ll get there soon enough and it’s no guarantee you’ll like
it when you do neither.’
Now we hear him talk. Later we’ll see him talk and act at greater length, each time
getting to know him better. O’Connor’s approach is incremental.
Here’s a portrait of a paranoid schizophrenic, drawn by summary of habits,
appearance and psychology. In ‘Ward VI,’ Anton Chekhov portrays the character so
gently that he undermines our trust in the diagnosis of madness; later in the story we
begin to perceive Russian psychiatry as mad, so that the character is quite justified
in feeling persecuted.
Ivan Dmitrich Gromov … is always in a state of agitation and excitement,
always under the strain of some vague undefined expectation. The slightest
rustle in the entry or shout in the yard is enough to make him raise his head
and listen: are they coming for him? Is it him they are looking for?
I like his broad pale face with its high cheekbones … His grimaces are queer
and morbid, but the fine lines drawn on his face by deep and genuine suffering
denote sensibility and culture, and there is a warm lucid gleam in his eyes. I like
the man himself, always courteous, obliging, and extremely considerate in his
treatment of everyone except Nikita. When anyone drops a button or a spoon,
he leaps from his bed and picks it up.
I think this is an excellent pattern not only combining summary and scene, but also
sympathy. Chekhov treats a type, a paranoid schizophrenic, with enough sympathy

that the type no longer threatens to reduce the human qualities and complexities of
Ivan’s character. Ivan has become a person for us.
Gustave Flaubert portrays Madame Bovary in a succession of different approaches.
Each time we meet her, we see a different aspect of her, in a new light, and in a new
approach:
[Brief Silent Scene] She made no comment. But as she sewed she pricked her
fingers and then put them into her mouth to suck them …
[Silent Scene, Habit, Appearance] As the room was chilly, she shivered a little
while eating. This caused her full lips to part slightly. She had a habit of biting
them when she wasn’t talking …
[Psychological Summary] Accustomed to the calm life, she turned away from it
toward excitement. She loved the sea only for its storms, and greenery only
when it was scattered among ruins. She needed to derive immediate
gratification from things and rejected as useless everything that did not supply
this satisfaction. Her temperament was more sentimental than artistic. She
sought emotions and not landscapes.
And later, of course, Flaubert stages Madame Bovary, just as Isherwood does Sally
Bowles. I recommend this pattern of multiple approaches particularly for your main
characters in a novel. If your character is complex enough, you might try all the
approaches you can think of to understand who you are creating. Your readers will
probably get involved, too, trying to understand with you. The trick is to be genuinely
curious about the people populating your fiction.

Start Writing Fiction، Ways of developing characters

 
Here novelists discuss how they develop their fictional characters using
a mixture of methodical research, accident and empathy. As you’re
reading ,Tim Pears, Monique Roffey, Alex Garland and Louis de
Bernières make a note how you might develop main characters and how
much work goes into differentiating between relatively minor characters.


TIM PEARS:


My first book was written from the point of view of a 13 year old girl, and I
never felt when I was writing it that I had to make some kind of special
effort, you know, to get into the mind of a female, or a young person
whatever. I think I just thought how I would think about things, and with a
little bit of sympathy, empathy towards somebody else and that was it.


MONIQUE ROFFEY:


I think it’s very much a mixture of accident and design. I think your
characters find you in the same way that your ideas find you. I think they
settle on you – snatches of people you’ve seen in the street sometimes
or snatches of someone you might have met, someone you might have,
you know, have had a brief encounter with, and they tend to kind of
morph, they tend to kind of mix. You’ll have somebody’s hairstyle with
somebody’s height and somebody’s vanity with somebody’s nose, you
know, so you kind of have a mixture come to you, but once that’s
happened I then absolutely treat him, treat it in a research like, a sort of
scholarly way – I use a character outline and I, I work on, on that and
develop and, so that I’ve got sometimes 7, 8, 9, 10, 15 pages, so that I 

know everything about that character, I know what his, what the
character’s grandmother’s maiden name was, whether they’re good at
dancing, whether they like Marmite, you know, I know everything about
that character by the time I’ve worked on it. So I use both, I use
conscious and the unconscious to sort of, to make someone.


ALEX GARLAND:


Characters came from all sorts of different places. There’s this gangster
in The Tesseract called Don Pepe who was sort of based on a guy I ran
into in a very remote part of the Philippines who came from Spanish
ancestry and had never been to Spain but was obsessed with Spain and
he’d lost all his money, he didn’t have a hacienda or anything, but he still
somehow clung on to that colonial past even though it was a long, long
time ago. And there was something about that that just interested me
and I kind of lifted him out and dropped him in there and some you just
invent.


LOUIS DE BERNIÈRES:


There seem to be two different types of character. There’s the type that
just turns up at your shoulder like a ghost and insists on being written,
it’s rather spooky, it’s a bit like being a medium. The other kind of
character is the sort that you, you invent more or less from scratch or
create as a composite of various people that you’ve noticed or come
across. And the one thing that does happen though is that as soon as
the character begins to become real, is, he or she starts misbehaving,
and they don’t do what you tell them to do. You often find yourself
altering the story to accommodate your characters. Your plans always
go wrong. It’s partly good old fashioned empathy, with a certain amount
of effort you can imagine what it’s like being somebody else.
If these characters are conveniently nearby you can always go and ask
them and listen to them talking. And quite often with a character, all
you’ve got to do is start them talking, like yakking in your head – it’s a bit
like being a paranoid schizophrenic but it’s under control, you know,
you’ve got all of these voices going on in your mind – you just let them
talk. And, and they develop quite happily on their own.

Sources of characters


Where do you find fictional people?
You can completely make them up, using psychology textbooks, astrology charts,
mythology, the Bible or, simply, your imagination. This is the ideal method – ideal in
a sense that you work from a purely intellectual creation, an idea about a character
whom you have not observed and who is not you. Although by using this method you
don’t draw from people you know to make your characters, you must speak of real
passions, and each character must appear like a real person. Real person is a bit of
a contradiction in terms because persona, the Latin root for person, means ‘mask’.
We usually take a mask to be the ‘unreal’, phony part of a person. But wearing a
mask at a carnival can help you live out your true passions that otherwise, due to
social pressures, you keep in check. Fiction is a carnival. So give us real passions
with good masks, and everybody will be fair game! Make up character masks,
release dramatic conflicts beneath them, and you will create startling people, such as
you would like, or fear, to meet.
The mother of all methods – though not necessarily the one you should use most –
is the autobiographical method, for it is through your own experience that you grasp
what it is to be a person. Because of this, you are bound, at least to some extent, to
project yourself into the fictional characters you render by any other method. Many
writers project themselves into all the characters they portray. This is, metaphorically
speaking, the fission approach: an atom may be split into several, during which an
enormous amount of energy is released. Fyodor Dostoyevski split his personality into
many fictional ones, all of them as temperamental as he. Mel Brooks, the comedy
writer and movie director, thinks this is the primary way to write: ‘Every human being
has hundreds of separate people living under his skin. The talent of a writer is his
ability to give them their separate names, identities, personalities, and have them
relate to other characters living with him.’
In the biographical method, you use people you have observed (or researched) as
the starting points for your fictional character. This seems to be the most popular method. Despite legal limitations on the biographical method, don’t shut down this
basic source of fictional characters. Hemingway said that if he explained the process
of turning a real-life character into a fictional one, it would be a handbook for libel
lawyers. The notion that writers work this way will keep some people quiet around
you lest you broadcast their secrets. For a long while it irritated me that my older
brother would not believe that I was becoming a writer; and now that he does, it
irritates me even more because he does not tell me anything about himself. To find
out about him, I talk to our middle brother, and as soon as my older brother finds out
that that’s how it works, he probably won’t talk to him either.
Most fictional characters are directly or at least indirectly drawn from life. E.M.
Forster, author of A Passage to India, said: ‘We all like to pretend we don’t use real
people, but one does actually. I used some of my family … This puts me among the
large body of authors who are not really novelists, and who have to get on as best
they can.’ (By the way, most novelists are not really novelists, and they must get on
as best they can. Nobody is born with this stuff, and hardly anybody becomes quite
secure in the craft. I think that’s comforting: Novelists are regular people, like you
and me.)
Using the biographical method, writers often compose their characters from the traits
of several people. To express it with another term from nuclear physics, this is the
fusion approach: You fuse character traits the way you fuse atoms. Lillian Hellman,
author of Pentimento, supports this view of making fictional characters: ‘I don’t think
you start with a person. I think you start with parts of many people. Drama has to do
with conflict in people, with denials.’ She looks for conflicts in real people and gives
these conflicts to her fictional characters, whose traits she gets from other people.
The fourth way to create fictional characters is the mixed method. Writers frequently
combine the biographical and the ideal methods since there’s a limit to relying on
direct knowledge of characters. In part, this stems from our inability to know people
in depth. Somerset Maugham, author of Of Human Bondage, said: ‘People are hard
to know. It is a slow business to induce them to tell you the particular thing about
themselves that can be of use to you.’ Unless you are a psychiatrist or a priest, you
probably will not find out the deep problems of the people around you. That does not
mean you can’t use some aspects of the people you know. But soon you must fill in
the gaps, and let’s hope that then you will create a character independent from the
real-life model. You may use ideas and imagination, or it may happen
spontaneously, as it apparently did to Graham Greene, author of The Human Factor,
who said: ‘One gets started and then, suddenly, one cannot remember what
toothpaste they use … The moment comes when a character does or says
something you hadn’t thought about. At that moment he’s alive and you leave it to
him.’ If your character begins to do something different from what the real-life
precedent would do, encourage this change, and forget about the real-life model.

Soon you should have someone answering to the necessities of your plot and
conflicts, not to the memory of the person you started with.
The ideal to strive for is a character who will come to life seemingly on his own. It will
no longer be the person from life outside the novel that served as a starting point, but
a fictional one, who not only is there to be written about, but who, in an optimal case,
writes for you. Erskine Caldwell expressed this blessed autonomy of fictional
characters: ‘I have no influence over them. I’m only an observer, recording. The story
is always being told by the characters themselves.’
Not all writers give their characters autonomy and allow them to dictate what to write
down. John Cheever said: ‘The legend that characters run away from their authors –
taking up drugs, having sex operations, and becoming president – implies that the
writer is a fool with no knowledge or mastery of his craft. This is absurd.’ Of course,
Cheever believed in his method and distrusted the methods of other authors. I think
it’s silly when a writer assumes that his method is the method for all writers.
However, it is good to learn what approaches exist, to try them all, and to see which
works best for you.
But one principle about constructing characters can be stated unequivocally.
Whether your characters attain autonomy or not, whether they come from you or
from Greek myths, the more you get to know them, the better you will work with
them.

Learn writting from novel fiction writters!

Writing fiction often involves finding out about things you don’t yet know
enough about, or checking things you are not sure of. Sometimes you
will use your journal to detail your research.
Here novelists Tim Pears, Patricia Duncker and Alex Garland talk about
their approaches to research.
TIM PEARS:
It’s one of the great advantages of writing a novel is that it’s an excuse to
find out about a whole world I always have that at the beginning of a book.
I think right, what do I really want to find out about for this book. I’ve got
some basic idea but, it’s got to be embedded in a world, a real world, a
world of people, and work which is something I’m kind of generally
interested in is what people do.
From everywhere, you know like a magnet, people sometimes say that,
you know the most important thing that we must do is to remember, do not
forget, you know do not forget, there’s a great a kind of a 20th Century
injunction, do not forget, do not allow things to be forgotten, and that
novelists are somehow, it’s one of our jobs, it’s a guardians of memory.
But in my own experience and for other writers that I’ve spoken to, it seems
like one of the common attributes is a poor memory, and it’s almost like you
kind of fill yourself up with things, and then you let them go, because you
move onto the next thing. So, certainly for In a Land of Plenty it was
dealing with the recent past with things that had happened in my lifetime,
but certainly I couldn’t rely on my own memory, so I would just draw on
everything; newspapers books, other people’s memories a lot.
Photographs, I think photographs are very useful, because you forget hair
style, fashion and so on and then it just all comes back, when you see a 

photograph and you think, my god we were dressed like that, and all things
come back.
PATRICIA DUNCKER:
I’ve written one historical novel which is my second novel, James Miranda
Barry. To some extent, I think all novels are historical novels because
whatever period you’re writing about, has to be thoroughly researched, and
the last novel that I wrote was a contemporary novel, that was set in our
present time. And I still found that I had to do almost as much research for
that as I did for James Miranda Barry.
With James Miranda Barry the research was fun because it was set in
the early part of the 19th Century through to about 1865/1870 and one of
the things about that period which really interests me is, the fact that you’re
moving from the Regency through to the Victorian period. So we’re
gradually becoming more and more straight-laced, and religion is
becoming more and more important in the society. So that the reading I
did was, a lot of history, an awful lot about the professions of my
characters. One was a doctor one was an actress, so I read an awful lot
about what the conditions were on the stage of that period, and about the
state of medical research in the 19th Century.
The other aspect of the book that was fascinating for me was the West
Indian content of the book. Because James Miranda Barry was a doctor
in the colonial service who worked abroad, and he spent some of his
professional life in Jamaica, which is where I come from, so it was
fascinating to read all the things that I’d vaguely heard about in history or
knew a little about, but to go into them in depth. Particularly, the slave
revolts, because there is a scene in the book which is about, the Morant
bay rebellion, about which I knew absolutely nothing, except that we
frequently commemorated it on stamps, until I’d researched it up. But I
wouldn’t say that I did less research for the novels that are contemporary,
and in fact, the research tends to be the same, it’s about professions, about
locations, and about the histories of places.

ALEX GARLAND:
I didn’t really do any deliberate research on either of the two books.
Coincidentally, I was a back packer that was what my life revolved
around in a way. Writing was always a secondary concern to me about
how I could get a ticket or a visa and where I wanted to go. The
Philippines, I was particularly fond of, I’d been there repeatedly for years
and years and years by the time I started to write The Tesseract so I
didn’t really need any research.
I think also research, deliberate research can be difficult because it’s a
kind of side step away from imagination or it can be if you’re not careful.
And that can show up in writing as well. I think very often, you know,
another one of these little truisms about writing is that a lot of writing is
about editing and about what you take out, and I think that’s very true
and if you leave a reader with a sense that something’s been too heavily
researched I think that’s bound to distance them from their emotional
contact with the narrative.

ابن الخطيب…خاشقجي ليس الوحيد

في رواية” ابن الخطيب في روضة طه “لكاتبها عبد الاله بن عرفة،يختلط التاريخ بالخيال…لينتج الكاتب سيرة  ذاتية افتراضية يصف فيها نفسية ابن الخطيب في مواطن عديدة، لا ادري من اين اتى الكاتب بهذا التصور او العمق الذي اضفاه على شخصية ابن الخطيب في الرواية/الكتاب. هل استقاها من كتب ابن الخطيب ام من خياله؟

هو لسان الدين بن الخطيب ،وزير غرناطة و شاعرها.. هو صاحب قصيدة جادك الغيث اذا الغيث همى…يا زمان الوصل بالاندلس

لم يكن وصلك الا حلما في الكرى أو خلسة المختلس.

لم يكن يعلم ابن الخطيب أن نهايته أيضا لم تختلف عن نهايةالأندلس الحزينة. كيف و بعدما ارتقى في مناصب الدولة فأصبح سفيرا و وزيرا ثم الرجل الأول للسلطان ،،ينقلب عليه 

 ثم تنتهي حياته مخنوقا في السجن،ثم بعد دفنه ينكل بجثته و تحرق.

يصف الكاتب في الرواية تحولات ابن الخطيب الداخلية ،نزعته إلى الصوفية إبان هروبه إلى المغرب،ثم ايثاره الاخرة على الدنيا،و كيف جر عليه هذا التغير عداء المستفيدين من الفساد.ا.

انقيد رجل الدولة مكبلا بالسلاسل ليقف أمام من كانوا بالامس  يعظمونه و يقبلون يده،يقف امامهم اليوم مدافعا عن نفسه  لينفي عنها ما رموه به من تهم الزندقة. سيق الوزير السفير الرئيس الشاعر و الزاهد ،سيق العالم و الطبيب و الاديب مكبلا بالاغلال ليحاكم من طرف أقوام لا علم لهم و لا ادب،ابن الخطيب انتهت حياته مغدورا ،مخنوقا من طرف رجال دولة أمضى حياته في خدمتها،خنقوه بعدما سجنوه اثر محاكمة كان قاضيها فاسدا و مستشارها تافها طامعا،ثم لم يكتفوا بذلك، فنكلوا بجثته بأن أحرقوها!فكيف اذن حدث هذا الانقلاب؟

كيف تحول الناصح الأمين للسلطان للاجئ مرمي بعدة تهم من طرف رجال كان له عليهم أياد بيضاء.

و كيف تغير رجال الدولة من رجال حكمة و صلاح الى فاسدين يتبعون الوشايات،و كيف جارت غرناطة على الرجل الذي طالما ذب عنها فنسيت صنائعه ثم ولت أمرها رجالا فاسدين،بل هل ملكت أمرها! ام هي ازمة غياب الدولة التي عصفت بابن الخطيب و بالاندلس من بعده!

لربما سيظل يكتب التاريخ عن مثل هذه المحاكمات حين يقف الشريف الكريم مهانا و يجلس اللئيم قاضيا !

تعرض الرواية ايضا العلاقة القوية التي جمعت مملكةغرناطة بالمغرب إبان حكم بني مرين،فقد كانوا لهم نعم السند،و لكن النزاعات على السلطة قوضت حكم الأخير و قصمت ظهر الاول.

رحم الله ابا عبد الله لسان الدين ابن الخطيب و رحم الله اموات المسلمين و من قضوا  عندما سقط حلم الاندلس!

When we are  challenged by a stressful situation, we may experience a great deal of distress. According to psychologists, defence mechanisms reduce distress by blocking the impulses or altering them into more acceptable and less threatening forms.

In this context PLM strategy is used in order to manage product relevant information through it lifecycle: from cradle to grave, in order to ensure those challenges.

The relevant information depends on enterprise judgement but it contains very often those elements:

  • Product configuration ( As planned, as built)

  • 3D models

  • Reconciliation of engineering Bill Of manufacturing ( E-BOM) and manufacturing BOM

  • Digital manufacturing

  • Test and validation

PLM strategy includes : People, Information Technology, Process, Product Information. It consists in the creation of product data like: Design, simulation, digital factory, etc…,  and in the management of the information : workflow, collaborative work tools, etc… .

Firstly, the enterprise maturity degree’s. It must be at least at level three, when all processes are defined, documented, standardized, and integrated in a quality system ( like ISO 9000 for instance) and organization is proactive.

Secondly, the enterprise needs must be defined accurately, the PLM strategy must be adopted to the enterprise requirements from different points of view: enterprise activity, capacity, needs, metadata, etc , so an accurate study is very important.

Thirdly , the willing and acceptance of the enterprise work staff of changing, change management is a crucial factor to make a PLM strategy successful.

To conclude, the market place is full of different solutions of PLM, with lot of promises and functions, but the enterprise must define what it needs really, commercial presentation sounds goods but efficient is more important!

PLM, Product lifecycle management, called also project life cycle management, is a comprehensive vision for managing  relevant data related to design, production, support and final disposal of manufactured products.

PLM concepts were introduced for the first time where safety and control were extremely important, such as aviation, medical devices, military and nuclear industries. These industries are behind configuration management concept, which has evolved into Electronic Data Management Systems (EDMS), which has evolved into Product Data Management (PDM).

Over the past decade, manufacturers of machinery, industrial machinery, consumer electronics, packaged goods and other complex products have discovered the benefits of PLM solutions and are increasingly dependent on effective PLM software.

What’s the purpose beyond a PLM approach?

PLM, Project/product Lifecycle Management approach is defined as a business strategy that manage product relevant information through its lifecycle.It This approche integrates all the information produced throughout all phases of a product’s life cycle to everyone in an organization at every managerial and technical level, along with key suppliers and customers.

PLM approach can not be applied succesfully in all kind of companies, in fact it depends on the company level of maturity.

  • Level1: Processes are unpredictable, poorly controlled and organization is reactive
  • Level 2 : Processes are characterized for specific projects and organization is often reactive.
  • Level 3: Processes are documented, standardized, and integrated in a quality system.Organization is proactive.
  • Level 4:Processes are measured and controlled
  • Level 5: Continuous process improvement is enabled by quantitative feedback from the process and from piloting innovative ideas and technologies.

Level of maturity is important before going towards implementing PLM tools, PLM approche can be only applied starting from Level 3 of maturity.

PLM approach aims to Schedule and track all aspects of product development processes and deliverables  in real time as work is completed, and optimize staffing by monitoring utilization and available organizational skills

PLM approach may allow to reduce manufacturing costs by enabling reuse of parts,  to manage product configuration and change by embedding  processes in configuration and change management such as : Change Notification, Engineering Change Request, Engineering Change Order,Manufacture Change Order, Problem Report ,etc,. ( See explanation of this concepts at Vocabulary)to exchange real data in a real time as example : M-BOM ( manufacturing Bill of Material) and E-BOM ( Engineering Bill of Material)and  to facilite outsourcing,etc..

PLM approach is used also for:

  • Provide real-time access to project pipelines for rapid analysis and decision making.
  • Expose resource bottlenecks in real-time with enhanced management visibility.
  • Increase resource utilization and reduce conflicts between project managers and functional group managers.
  • Drive phased-based decision making processes using best-in-class process templates, with predefined phases, gates and milestones.
  • Improve execution and oversight of complex product development activities by decomposing projects into smaller manageable projects with visibility to sub-project dependencies.

Document Iteration

  • A new document iteration is made when the electronic file corresponding to a user save operation is preserved in the vault without overwriting the existing electronic file for the same document ID (metadata).

Ultimately, you’ll want to throw them away.  But not just yet …

Capture.PNGInstead of overwriting existing files in the vault, a new document iteration joins its “sibling” iterations in the document vault. The primary purpose of this mechanism is for security reasons; if ever the user corrupts or loses a document, he can restore or “roll back” a “healthy” document from among the previously saved iterations.

He can then resume his work from the retrieved iteration.Document iterations are especially relevant in high-end CAD design, where part geometry and connectivity can become quite sophisticated. If the user feels that he has taken a wrong path, sometimes it is easier to start over again from a previously saved iteration than it is try to “undo” the regretted modifications.In general, however, document iterations are transparent to the end-user and are only accessed in the event of emergencies.

Multi-representation

Multi-representation is when several documents are used to describe one part.

While modern CAD files can capture precise 3D representations of a part’s geometry, this pretty shape is not sufficient to capture all of the part’s complexity and behavior. Multi-representation describes the practice of defining several documents which collectively describe a part. Even if we disregard non-geometrical representations, a given part potentially has many different geometrical representations which can include any of the following (non-exhaustive):

ØDetailed 3D geometry

ØLightweight approximated geometry (for visualization mode e.g., CGR)

ØSimplified geometry (for CAE analysis … e.g., no fillets)

Ø2D drawing (for “old fashion manuf, or tech doc)

ØSwept volume ( for mounting/unmounting studies)

ØVibration volume (for other analysis)

ØPre-machined representation (for manufacturability sutdies)

ØPost-assembly deformation (for complex assembly manuf simultation)

As opposed to managing each document independently, it is convenient to have an object which federates or collects all these documents together.

For checking progress along the way

Milestones (or program milestones) are pre-determined checkpoints used to measure and track progress during a big project or an entire product development program.

1.Milestones are checkpoints determined ahead of time in order to measure progress on a product development program.

2.Milestones are the gates which mark the close of distinct project phases.  The virtual product is assembled and validated at this point in time.  

3.A number of conditions might need to be met (e.g., absence of clash, target KPIs) in order for the phase to be officially completed.

  • Each milestone represents an actual date or product unit number.
  • For example:

ØMilestone 1: “Prototype”    = January 2012

ØMilestone 2: “Certification”  = June 2013

Distinct states over the course of a lifetime

lifecycleLifecycles specify the distinct states that an object (a part, a product, an assembly ….) can evolve through during the course of its lifetime.

Part maturity is an attribute which can only take pre-defined values.
The lifecycle specifies these values.

These values can only be assigned according to a specific order, also defined by the lifecycle, usually going from lower to higher maturity

And ending ultimately in a final, or terminal, maturity state.

It is thus natural to speak of maturity “levels.” Changing maturity levels is often referred to as “promoting” or “demoting” the object.

  • Lifecycles can potentially be used on a wide variety of object types in order to capture fine distinctions in overall maturity.

على مدى 18 شهرًا ، قدمت شركة Rising Sun Pictures في أستراليا نحو 170 لقطة تأثير خاص لـ “Thor: Ragnarok” ، مما ساعد على جعلها واحدة من أكثر الأفلام الناجحة تجاريا في عام 2017. من نماذج الشخصية إلى خلق المخلوقات و تصميم مجموعة ، ساعدوا في تشكيل صور ثور من مرحلة ما قبل الإنتاج حتى التخفيض النهائي. يتحدث مساعد المدير العام في شركة RSP ، Hubert Maston ، خلال عملهم حول الفيلم والتحديات التي يواجهونها والأدوات التي استخدموها لسحبها جميعًا.

The first secret of great design

Why do we get used to everyday things?
Well as human beings, we have limited brain power. contrary of personal developpement theories and Morgan Freeman, the famous actor , speech in Lucy movie !
And so our brains encode the  everyday things we do into habits, so we can free up space
to learn new things.
It’s a process called habituation, and it’s one of the most basic ways, as humans, we learn.
Now, habituation isn’t always bad. Do you remember learning to drive? Your hands clenched at 10 and 2 on the wheel, looking at every single object out there: the cars, the lights, the pedestrians.
It’s a nerve-wracking experience.
So much so, that you couldn’t even talk to anyone else in the car nor  even listen to music.
But then something interesting happened. As the weeks went by, driving became easier and easier. You habituated it and It started to become  fun and second nature.
So there’s a good reason why our brains habituate things. If we didn’t, we’d notice every little detail, all the time!
It would be exhausting, and we’d have no time to learn about new things.
But sometimes, habituation isn’t good,if it stops us from noticing  the problems that are around us, and if it stops us from noticing  and fixing those problems,

But designers, innovators  and entrepreneurs, it’s their job to not just notice
those things, but to go one step further and try to fix them.

Let take the example of Mary Anderson:

In 1902 in New York City, she was visiting. It was a cold, wet, snowy day and she was warm inside a streetcar.
As she was going to her destination, she noticed the driver opening the window
to clean off the excess snow so he could drive safely.
When he opened the window, though, he let all this cold, wet air inside,
making all the passengers miserable. Now probably, most of those  passengers just thought, “It’s a fact of life, he’s got to open the window to clean it. That’s just how it is.”
But Mary didn’t. Mary thought, “What if the diver could actually clean
the windshield from the inside so that he could stay safe and drive and the passengers could  actually stay warm?”
So she picked up her sketchbook right then and there,
and began drawing what would become the world’s first windshield wiper.

Tony Fadell

The man behind the iPod and the Nest thermostat, Tony Fadell, said in one of his talks:

“Now as a product designer, I try to learn from people like Mary to try to see the world
the way it really is, not the way we think it is.
Why?
Because it’s easy to solve a problem that almost everyone sees. But it’s hard to solve a problem that almost no one sees.
Now some people think you’re born with this ability or you’re not, as if Mary Anderson was hardwired at birth to see the world more clearly. That wasn’t the case for me. I had to work at it.
During my years at Apple, Steve Jobs challenged us to come into work every day,
to see our products through  the eyes of the customer, the new customer, the one that has fears and possible frustrations and hopeful exhilaration that their new technology product could work straightaway for them He called it staying beginners, and wanted to make sure that we focused on those tiny little details, to make them faster, easier and seamless for the new customers.
So I remember this clearly in the very earliest days of the iPod. See, back in the ’90s, being a gadget freak like I am, I would rush out to the store for the very, very latest gadget.
I’d take all the time to get to the store,
I’d check out, I’d come back home,
I’d start to unbox it.
And then, there was  another little sticker: the one that said, “Charge before use.”
What! I can’t believe it!
I just spent all this time buying this product and now I have to charge before use.
I have to wait what felt like an eternity to use that coveted new toy.
It was crazy.
But you know what?
Almost every product back then did that. When it had batteries in it, you had to charge it before you used it.
Well, Steve noticed that and he said, “We’re not going to let that  happen to our product.”
So what did we do?
Typically, when you have a product that has a hard drive in it, you run it for about
30 minutes in the factory to make sure that hard drive’s going  to be working years later
for the customer after they  pull it out of the box.

What did we do instead?
We ran that product for over two hours.
Why?
Well, first off, we could make a higher quality product, be easy to test, and make sure it was great for the customer. But most importantly, the battery came fully charged
right out of the box, ready to use.
So that customer,  with all that exhilaration, could just start using the product. It was great, and it worked. People liked it.
Today, almost every product that you get that’s battery powered comes out of the box fully charged, even if it doesn’t have a hard drive. But back then, we noticed
that detail and we fixed it, and now everyone else does that as well.
No more, “Charge before use.”

why telling this?
Well, it’s seeing the invisible problem, not just the obvious problem, that’s important, not just for product design, but for everything we do.
You see, there are invisible problems all around us, ones we can solve. But first we need
to see them, to feel them.
So, here are few tips about neuroscience or psychology that I do that we all can do,
to fight habituation.

  • My first tip is to look broader.

You see, when you’re tackling a problem, sometimes, there are a lot of steps
that lead up to that problem. And sometimes, a lot  of steps after it.
If you can take a step back and look broader, maybe you can change some of those boxes before the problem.
Maybe you can combine them.
Maybe you can remove them altogether
to make that better.
Take thermostats, for instance. In the 1900s when they first came out,
they were really simple to use. You could turn them up or turn them down.
People understood them. But in the 1970s, the energy crisis struck, and customers started thinking about how to save energy.
So what happened?
Thermostat designers decided  to add a new step,instead of just turning up and down, you now had to program it. So you could tell it the temperature you wanted at a certain time.
Now that seemed great!
Every thermostat had started adding that feature.
But it turned out that no one saved any energy. Now, why is that?
Well, people couldn’t predict the future.
They just didn’t know how their weeks would change season to season, year to year. So no one was saving energy, and what happened?
Thermostat designers went back to the drawing board and they focused on that programming step. They made better U.I.s, they made better documentation.
But still, years later, people were not saving any energy because they just couldn’t predict the future. So what did we do?
We put a machine-learning algorithm in instead of the programming that would simply watch when you turned it up and down, when you liked a certain temperature
when you got up, or when you went away.

And you know what? It worked.
People are saving energy  without any programming. So, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. If you take a step back  and look at all the boxes, maybe there’s a way
to remove one or combine them, so that you can make  that process much simpler.

  • For my second tip, it’s to look closer.

One of my greatest teachers was my grandfather.He taught me all about the world.

I remember one story he told me about screws, and about how you need to have the right screw for the right job. There are many different screws:

wood screws, metal screws, anchors, concrete screws, the list went on and on. Our job is to make products that are easy to install for all of our customs themselves without professionals. So what did we do? and so we thought, “How many different screws  can we put in the box?
Was it going to be two, three,four, five?
Because there’s so many different wall types.” So we thought about it, we optimized it, and we came up with three different
screws to put in the box. We thought that was going to solve the problem. But it turned out, it didn’t. So we shipped the product, and people weren’t having
a great experience. So what did we do?
We went back to the drawing board
just instantly after we figured out we didn’t get it right. And we designed a special screw, a custom screw, much to the chagrin of our investors. They were like, “Why are you spending so much time on a little screw?
Get out there and sell more!”
And we said, “We will sell more if we get this right.” And it turned out, we did. With that custom little screw,
there was just one screw in the box, that was easy to mount and put on the wall. So if we focus on those tiny details, the ones we may not see and we look at them as we say, “Are those important or is that the way we’ve always done it?
Maybe there’s a way to get rid of those.”

  • So my last piece of advice is to think younger.

Every day, I’m confronted with interesting questions from my three young kids. They come up with questions like,
“Why can’t cars fly around traffic?”
Or, “Why don’t my shoelaces have Velcro instead?” Sometimes, those questions are smart. My son came to me the other day
and I asked him, “Go run out to the mailbox
and check it.” He looked at me, puzzled, and said, “Why doesn’t the mailbox just check itself and tell us when it has mail?” (Laughter)I was like, “That’s a pretty  good question.”
So, they can ask tons of questions and sometimes we find out we just don’t have the right answers.
We say, “Son, that’s just the way the world works.” So the more we’re exposed to something, the more we get used to it. But kids haven’t been around
long enough to get used to those things. And so when they run into problems, they immediately try to solve them, and sometimes they find a better way, and that way really is better.
So my advice that we take to heart is to have young people on your team, or people with young minds. Because if you have those young minds, they cause everyone in the room
to think younger.

We all saw the world more clearly when we saw it for the first time, before a lifetime of habits  got in the way. Our challenge is to get back there, to feel that frustration, to see those little details, to look broader,
look closer,

and to think younger

So we can stay beginners. It’s not easy.It requires us pushing back against one of the most basic ways we make sense of the world.
But if we do, we could do some pretty amazing things.
For me, hopefully, that’s better product design. For you, that could mean something else, something powerful.
Our challenge is to wake up  each day and say, “How can I experience the world better?””

3D printing, how to choose the right material, case study (2)

Emirates has announced that it has used cutting-edge 3D printing technology to manufacture components for its aircraft cabins.
The airline has reached a significant milestone in innovation by using Selective Laser
Sintering (SLS), a new and innovative 3D printing technique to produce video monitor
shrouds. One of the other recent achievements has been the 3D printing, certification
and installation of aircraft cabin video monitor shrouds for onboard trials.
Emirates has worked with 3D Systems’ advanced aerospace engineering teams,
and with UUDS, a European aviation Engineering and Certification Office and Services
Provider based in France, to successfully print the first batch of 3D printed video
monitor shrouds using 3D Systems’ Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology platform.
This technology uses lasers to bind together powdered plastic into the required shape

Anger Vs Compassion!, a way to manage anger

Even when we can see that our uncontrolled angeris causing lots of problems in our lives and in our relationships, we can be reluctant to give it up. We like feeling powerful. We like feeling strong. And that’s why I think if we’ll really be able to commit ourselves to work with emotions like anger, we have to discover new ways to be strong and that’s where compassion comes in.

One way to think of temperament is the idea that some people are born having an easier time experiencing certain emotions. Some of us are very easy going, intend to take things in stride, don’t get too worked up for the things that don’t go our way.
However, other of us will have a very different experience of life, they may have a much more anxious temperament.they may notice feelings of anxiety coming up in them easily, frequently, and sometimes, very powerfully.
But if we are going to have happy lives and good relationships, we’ve got to take responsibility for working with what we’ve got. And a part of what I had to work with
is anger and irritability.

There are actually quite a good number of effective anger management techniques.
That this is true: if you are someone who struggles with anger, there are some powerful tools out there that you can use.
The tricky bit is getting people to use those tools. It’s neither easy nor fun to admit that you have problems with anger and to commit yourself to working with it.
Let me ask you a question:
have you ever said or done something out of anger that’s caused terrible pain in the people you love the most?
How does it feel to admit that to yourself?
Do you find yourself wanting to move toward that experience or to move away from it and never waited?
It can also be a pretty lonely thing;
to be someone who struggles with anger.
Think about it!
When we see someone who is anxious, what do we want to do? We want to approach and reassure them.
When we see someone who is sad, we want to approach and comfort them.

What do you want to do when you see someone who’s angry and hostile? You want to get the heck out of there, right?
Of course you do, we all do. That’s part of what anger does.
It pushes people away. But what that means is that you or someone who really struggles with anger can get very used to the sight of other people walking away because they don’t want to be around you.
And that’s hard.
For me, although the feeling of my anger felt powerful in me when I really took a look at it, I discovered that behind that anger were a lot of other much more
vulnerable feelings and emotions:

  • the fear that I couldn’t control my own feelings,
  • the sadness that my behavior was so different from the man I wanted to be
  • the shame of watching the people I loved the most walking on eggs hells around me

And in the face of all that scary stuff, I did what a lot of folks do:
I avoided it.
I just tried not to feel it, distract yourself, blame other people, rationalize.
those sorts of things, right?And over time, I discovered, through experience,
what a growing body of scientific research
is demonstrating which is that working with difficult emotions by avoiding them doesn’t work and often makes things worse.

so at this point, I took decisive action in the way we, academics, do: I began to read.You see, compassion involves allowing ourselves
to be moved by suffering, the suffering of other people, and even our own suffering.
And experiencing a commitment, a desire to help, to obliviate that suffering. Compassion begins with courage, the courage to face the things that make us uncomfortable,
and sometimes, the courage to face the things that scary us the most about ourselves.

Compassion gave me a way to work with my anger, not by turning away from it and avoiding it but by turning towards it. not with condemnation but with kindness
and a commitment to do better.
admitting to have problems with anger and working with it, is like being Frodo
marching in the Mordor.
It maybe ugly, it maybe scary.
But over time,  the more you move towards it, the easier it gets and the stronger you get.
And after a while, all those terrifying emotions just stopped being so terrifying and start being normal human feelings we can acknowledge and work with.
Let’s try an exercise

Exercise

I’d like you to bring to mind a situation in which you recently struggled.
Maybe a time when you were feeling powerful feelings of anger,
sadness, or fear, shame, or whatever you struggled with.
And as you look back on that struggling version of you in that situation,
try to look back with compassion.
The way you would relate to someone you cared about and wanted to help.
See if it’s possible to see those powerful feelings and thoughts you had at that time, not as something that was wrong with you but as normal human reactions that we have in the face of difficulty. If you were at your very best,
you’re kindest, you’re wisest,
you’re most courageous,

you’re most compassionate,
how would you understand what was happening there?

If you could go back and whisper into the ear of that vulnerable version of you, in that situation, what support or encouragement might you offer to help yourself be at your best in that moment, as you face that difficulty?

You see, that’s compassion!
and if you’re interested in bringing that compassion in the every moments of your life
you might try three things; it’s a good start.
The next time you noticed yourself filled with anger, shame,
or some other emotion you’re struggling with,
instead of just going and acting on that emotion or denying and avoiding it,
beating yourself up for having it,
what if you just took a moment to just compassionately acknowledge what was happening in you?
To notice,
“Wow, I’m really angry right now.
I’m really struggling, this is really hard.”

That’s number one.
Second thing: at that moment, see if you can take a moment to slow things down,
to take a minute or two just slow down your breathing.
Slowing down the body can help slow down the mind.
Anger tries to convince us that we have to act right now,
but we don’t have to believe it; we can take a moment,
or to balance our emotions first, and then work with the situation.
Now, if this sounds awfully a pie in the sky,
let me say that I’ve used compassion-focused therapy
to work with men sentenced to decades in prison, many of them for violent crimes
–and yeah, when I walked in the prison looking like this
talking about compassion, initially I get some eye rolls.
But over time, these men discover what I had learned
that the anger that felt so powerful in them was often a method they used to run away
from more vulnerable feelings and emotions like sadness or shame,
and that compassion gave them a way to work with all of that,
and these men didn’t just stopped working with anger either,
they actively looked for ways to support one another;
and then, they looked out into the world and they asked more questions.
Questions like how can I help people out there?
So they don’t end up in here.
Even from prison, how can I help?
And if they can do it, so can we.
That’s true strength.
That’s compassion.

The human insights missing from big data

 

This post is inpired from  Tricia Wang talks, she demystifies big data and identifies its pitfalls, suggesting that we focus instead on “thick data” — precious, unquantifiable insights from actual people — to make the right business decisions and thrive in the unknown.

People have craved for prophecy in order to find out what’s going to happen next. And that’s because we all want to make the right decision. We don’t want to miss something. The future is scary, so it’s much nicer knowing that we can make a decision with some assurance of the outcome.

Well, big data may be useful!

or we call it “Watson” or “deep learning” or “neural net.” And these are the kinds of questions like, “What’s the most efficient wa to ship these phones from China to Sweden?” Or, “What are the odds of my child being born with a genetic disorder?” Or, “What are the sales volume we can predict for this product?”

for very accurate weather predictions in the next 10 minutes, this prensents a $122 billion industry.

Now, despite the size of this industry, the returns are surprisingly low.

Over 73 percent of big data projects aren’t even profitable,

Investing in big data is easy, but using it is hard. Over 73 percent of big data projects aren’t even profitable, and I have executives coming up saying,
“We’re experiencing the same thing. We invested in some big data system, and our employees aren’t making better decisions. And they’re certainly not coming up
with more breakthrough ideas.” So this is all really interesting to me,

“because I’m a technology ethnographer”.

I study and I advise companieson the patterns of how people use technology, and one of my interest areas is data. So why is having more data not helping us make better decisions, especially for companies who have all these resources to invest in these big data systems? Why isn’t it getting any easier for them?
So, I’ve witnessed the struggle firsthand.

Nokia crash

In 2009, I started a research position with Nokia.

And at the time, Nokia was one of the largest cell phone companies in the world, dominating emerging markets like China, Mexico and India — all places where I had done
a lot of research on how low-income people use technology. And I spent a lot of extra time in China getting to know the informal economy. So I did things like working
as a street vendor selling dumplings to construction workers. hanging out with Chinese youth, so I could understand how they were using games and mobile phones and using it between moving from the rural areas to the cities. Through all of this qualitative evidence that I was gathering, I was starting to see so clearly that a big change was about to happen among low-income Chinese peopleEven though they were surrounded
by advertisements for luxury products like fancy toilets who wouldn’t want one? and apartments and cars, through my conversations with them, I found out that the ads

into this high-tech life.

I saw people investing over half of their monthly income into buying a phone, and increasingly, they were “shanzhai,” which are affordable knock-offs
of iPhones and other brands.

They’re very usable. Does the job. And after years of living with migrants and working with them and just really doing everything that they were doing,

I started piecing all these data points together ,from the things that seem random,
like me selling dumplings, to the things that were more obvious, like tracking how much they were spending on their cell phone bills. And I was able to create
this much more holistic picture of what was happening.
And that’s when I started to realize that even the poorest in China would want a smartphone, and that they would do almost anything to get their hands on one.

You have to keep in mind, iPhones had just come out, it was 2009, so this was, like, eight years ago, and Androids had just started looking like iPhones. And a lot of very smart
and realistic people said: “Those smartphones — that’s just a fad.
Who wants to carry around these heavy things where batteries drain quickly
and they break every time you drop them?”
But I had a lot of data, and I was very confident about my insights, so I was very excited to share them with Nokia.

But Nokia was not convinced, because it wasn’t big data.

They said, “We have millions of data points,

and we don’t see any indicators of anyone wanting to buy a smartphone, and your data set of 100, as diverse as it is, is too weak for us to even take seriously.”

And I said, “Nokia, you’re right.

Of course you wouldn’t see this, because you’re sending out surveys
assuming that people don’t know what a smartphone is, so of course you’re not going
to get any data back about people wanting to buy a smartphone in two years. Your surveys, your methods have been designed to optimize an existing business model, and I’m looking at these emergent human dynamics that haven’t happened yet. We’re looking outside of market dynamics so that we can get ahead of it.”

Well, you know what happened to Nokia?

Their business fell off a cliff. This — this is the cost of missing something.

It was unfathomable.

But Nokia’s not alone.

I see organizations throwing out data all the time because it didn’t come from a quant model or it doesn’t fit in one. But it’s not big data’s fault.

It’s the way we use big data; it’s our responsibility. Big data’s reputation for success comes from quantifying very specific environments,

like electricity power grids or delivery logistics or genetic code, when we’re quantifying in systems that are more or less contained. But not all systems are as neatly contained. When you’re quantifying and systems are more dynamic, especially systems
that involve human beings, forces are complex and unpredictable,

and these are things that we don’t know how to model so well.

Once you predict something about human behavior, new factors emerge, because conditions are constantly changing.

That’s why it’s a never-ending cycle.

You think you know something,

and then something unknown enters the picture.

And that’s why just relying on big data alone increases the chance
that we’ll miss something, while giving us this illusion that we already know everything.

And what makes it really hard to see this paradox and even wrap our brains around it

is that we have this thing that I call the quantification bias, which is the unconscious belief of valuing the measurable over the immeasurable. And we often experience this at our work.

Maybe we work alongside colleagues who are like this, or even our whole entire
company may be like this, where people become so fixated on that number,
that they can’t see anything outside of it, even when you present them evidence
right in front of their face.
And this is a very appealing message, because there’s nothing wrong with quantifying;

it’s actually very satisfying.

I get a great sense of comfort from looking at an Excel spreadsheet, even very simple ones.

It’s just kind of like, “Yes! The formula worked. It’s all OK.
Everything is under control.”

But the problem is that quantifying is addictive.

And when we forget that and when we don’t have something to kind of keep that in check, it’s very easy to just throw out data because it can’t be expressed as a numerical value.
It’s very easy just to slip into silver-bullet thinking, as if some simple solution existed.

Because this is a great moment of danger for any organization, because oftentimes,
the future we need to predict — it isn’t in that haystack, but it’s that tornado
that’s bearing down on us outside of the barn.

There is no greater risk than being blind to the unknown.

It can cause you to miss something big.

How did anyone get any useful advice out of her in this state?

 

 

 

I’m not saying that big data systems are huffing ethylene gas, or that they’re even giving
invalid predictions. The total opposite. But what I am saying ,our big data systems need  people like ethnographers and user researchers who can gather what I call thick data.

This is precious data from humans,

like stories, emotions and interactions that cannot be quantified.

It’s the kind of data that I collected for Nokia that comes in in the form
of a very small sample size, but delivers incredible depth of meaning.

And what makes it so thick and meaty is the experience of understanding
the human narrative.

And that’s what helps to see what’s missing in our models.

Thick data grounds our business questions in human questions,

and that’s why integrating big and thick data forms a more complete picture.

Big data is able to offer insights at scaleand leverage the best of machine intelligence, whereas thick data can help us rescue the context loss that comes from making big data usable, and leverage the best of human intelligence.

And when you actually integrate the two, that’s when things get really fun, because then you’re no longer just working with data you’ve already collected.

You get to also work with data
that hasn’t been collected.

You get to ask questions about why:

Why is this happening?

Netflix

Now, when Netflix did this, they unlocked a whole new way to transform their business.

Netflix is known for their really great recommendation algorithm,

and they had this $1 million prize for anyone who could improve it.
And there were winners.

But Netflix discovered the improvements were only incremental.

So to really find out what was going on, they hired an ethnographer,
Grant McCracken, to gather thick data insights.
And what he discovered was something that they hadn’t seen initially in the quantitative data. He discovered that people loved to binge-watch.
In fact, people didn’t even feel guilty about it. They enjoyed it.

So Netflix was like,
“Oh. This is a new insight.”

So they went to their data science team, and they were able to scale this big data insight in with their quantitative data.

And once they verified it and validated it,

Netflix decided to do something very simple but impactful.

They said, instead of offering the same show from different genres
or more of the different shows from similar users, we’ll just offer more of the same show.

We’ll make it easier for you to binge-watch.

And they didn’t stop there.

They did all these things to redesign their entire viewer experience,
to really encourage binge-watching. It’s why people and friends disappear for whole weekends at a time,

catching up on shows like “Master of None.”
By integrating big data and thick data, they not only improved their business,

but they transformed how we consume media.

And now their stocks are projected to double in the next few years.

But this isn’t just about watching more videos or selling more smartphones.

For some, integrating thick data insights into the algorithm

could mean life or death, especially for the marginalized.

All around the country, police departments are using big data

for predictive policing, to set bond amounts
and sentencing recommendations in ways that reinforce existing biases.

 

Now, the good news is that we’ve come a long way from huffing ethylene gas
to make predictions.

We have better tools, so let’s just use them better.
Let’s integrate the big data with the thick data.
and whether this work happens in companies or nonprofits or government or even in the software, all of it matters, because that means we’re collectively committed to making better data,

Alternate parts are different parts in inventory that fill the same function

  • Alternate parts are interchangeable components

    post-release production phase.
  • For example, a factory might have two different windshield wipers in inventory that fill the same function, and for a given car they must decide which one to use. Both of these parts are released and have different part numbers.

Evaluate several, choose one.  Only one.  “Design alternatives”

When Julie plans her wedding, she may consider different alternatives for her hairdo.  But come the wedding day, only one hairdo is possible; she must make a choice.  These are design alternatives.

  • Design alternatives are competing solution scenarios for a given part.
  • With respect to a given part, there are times when a designer wants to explore several different alternatives in parallel.
  • This is during the design phase when he (or the design office) is not yet sure what an optimal part would look like.
  • Ultimately, he will retain only one alternative and abandon the others.

Part vs. design alternatives

  • Although some design alternatives never see the light of day, there are times when the designer wants to publish two or more design alternatives for the same part.
  • Yet, even if there are several design alternatives, there is still only one part (and by extension, only one part number) in the BOM.
  • With respect to this one part, the designer delivers different variations of the part geometry in order to allow the downstream actors to choose the best one (e.g., as a result of CAE analysis, manufacturing feasibility, etc.).
  • In pre-release design phases, the designer delivers a collection of suggestions without yet committing himself to one particular design.
  • Simply speaking, he is essentially sharing his ideas and asking the others which one they like best.
  • Yet, it is important to understand that these suggestions all concern the same part.

Promotion of design alternatives

Different companies have different approaches to the management and maturation of part design alternatives. These fall roughly into two distinct schools of thought: one, where a group of related alternatives is managed together, and another where alternatives evolve independently one from the other. These two approaches might be called:

  • School class paradigm
  • Company paradigm

Design iterations

With respect to non-released (or “under construction”) parts, any change that the designer considers worthy of saving for posterity constitutes a new design iteration.

1.Part design iterations are changes to part geometry and placement which need to be recorded and tracked.

  1. When a designer is finished with a given geometry, he will publish it (promote its maturity status) in order that others may now take this geometry into account for their own needs.

Preserving distinct iterations of a part’s design allows other actors in the product design process to work on an official or “published” iteration of that part.  In the meantime, the part owner continues to refine his design on a private “in-work” iteration of the same part.

  • Design iterations are used to help converge on a part’s ultimate shape and characteristics. In simple terms, they are the photographs taken as the part is growing up. They record primarily updates to part geometry.
  • Ultimately, one design iteration is selected as the one to be released and go into production.
  • Published iterations go into the “public domain” of a development project and are used or referenced by others for several purposes, including:

ØThe design of other parts (“design in contextand “contextual design”)

ØIntegration and consolidation (interference with surrounding parts, assembly feasibility in the vehicle context, etc.)

FURPS+ A System for ClassifyingRequirements

A classification system was devised by Robert Grady at Hewlett-Packard.It goes by the acronym FURPS+ which represents:
–Functionality
–Usability
–Reliability
–Performance
–Supportability
The “+” in FURPS+ also helps us to remember concerns such as:
–Design requirements
–Implementation requirements
–Interface requirements
–Physical requirements

Functional requirements

These requirements generally represent the main product features.
They state what the product must do.
Functional requirements are defined in general terms at the beginning of a project.
As the development progresses, requirements become better understood by all stakeholders.
Therefore, the requirements can be revised and improved in an iterative and incremental fashion.

URPS

•Usability, Reliability, Performance, and Supportability Requirements
•Non-functional requirements specify the Quality factors which determine the architecture in which the functional requirements are satisfied.
•The remaining “URPS” categories describe non-functional requirements that are generally architecturally significant.
•Usabilityis concerned with characteristics such as aesthetics and consistency in the user interface.
•Reliabilityis concerned with characteristics such as availability (the amount of system “up time”), accuracy of system calculations, and the system’s ability to recover from failure.
•Performanceis concerned with characteristics such as throughput, response time, recovery time, start-up time, and shutdown time.
•Supportabilityis concerned with characteristics such as testability, adaptability, maintainability, compatibility, configurability, installability, scalability, and localizability.

FURPS +

•Design, Implementation, Interface, and Physical Requirements
•The “+” in the FURPS+ acronym is used to identify additional categories that generally represent constraints.
•Adesign requirement, often called a design constraint, specifies or constrains the options for designing a system.
•Animplementation requirementspecifies or constrains the coding or construction of a system. Examples might include required standards, implementation languages, and resource limits.
•Aninterface requirementspecifies an external item with which a system must interact, or constraints on formats or other factors used within such an interaction.
•Aphysical requirementspecifies a physical constraint imposed on the hardware used to house the system —shape, size, or weight, for example.

Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEAs),advantages and criticism

FMEA is a systematic analysis of the systems to whatever level of detail is required to demonstrate that no single failure will cause an undesired event.
It is commonly defined as:
–“a systematic process for identifying potential design and process failures before they occur, with the intent to eliminate them or minimisethe risk associated with them”.

What are its objectives?

To identify potential design and process failures before they occur and to minimise the risk of failure by either proposing design changes or, if these cannot be formulated, proposing operational procedures. Essentially the FMEA is to:
–Identify the equipment or subsystem, mode of operation and the equipment;
–Identify potential failure modes and their causes;
–Evaluate the effects on the system of each failure mode;
–Identify measures for eliminating or reducing the risks associated with each failure mode;
–Identify trials and testing necessary to prove the conclusions; and
–Provide information to the operators and maintainers so that they understand
–the capabilities and limitations of the system to achieve best performance.

When is an FMEA carried out?

The FMEA should be commenced at the earliest stage that the design and development program will allow –even to assist at a higher level in identifying potential weaknesses during the conceptual design.

FMEA Background

FMEA Emerged in the 1960‘s as a formal methodology in the aerospace and defense industries. In 1974, the Navy developed MIL-STD-1629 outlining a procedure for FMEA.
In the late 1970’s, automotive applications driven by liability costs, began to incorporate FMEA into the management of their processes.
Since then it has been adopted and standardized by many countries and industries

Different FMEAs

Many procedures partition the FMEA into several categories:
–System FMEA: an effective means of analyzing a design in terms of overall performance specifications, functions, interfaces, inputs, and outputs.
–Design FMEA identifies flaws in the specification of the design.
–Process FMEA specifies how manufacturing variation and errors might affect manufacturing efficiency and product functionality.
Often, the System and Design FMEA are combined into a comprehensive analysis covering product functionality.

Why perform an FMEA?

The thought process behind FMEA is implicit in any design effort: teams and individuals continuously ask “what could go wrong?” and “how could problems be prevented?”
FMEA is a way of documenting this thought process and making risks explicit. Some of the reasons for performing FMEA are:
–Improve Customer Satisfaction: help identify Customer Requirements (& how these might not be achieved), as well as improving reliability and safety in general.
–Provide Thoroughness: increase the likelihood that all potential failures and effects will be considered.
–Reduce Development Effort: reduce product development time and cost.
–Focus Test Planning: focus the development of test plans.
–Provide Documentation: make technical risks explicit to team members, suppliers, management.

Criticisms of FMEA

•FMEA is an established and prevalent design methodology, and yet it has also drawn some criticisms. Some documented criticisms of FMEA include:
–Performed too late, FMEA does not affect key product/process decisions (McKinney, 1991)
–FMEA does not capture key failures (Bednarz& Marriott, 1988)
–The analysis is not repeatable (Bell et al., 1992)
–FMEA is often an afterthought “checklist” exercise (Kara-Zaitriet al., 1991)
–Process is tedious (Ormsbyet al., 1992)
–The Risk Priority Number gives a distorted measure of risk (Gilchrist, 1993, Harpster1999)

Ranking Risks

•The Risk Priority Number (RPN) has evolved as an index used to prioritize failures in most FMEA standards. The RPN consists of three elements:
–Occurrence (O) –how likely is the cause to occur and result in the failure mode?
–Severity (S) –how serious are the end effects?
–Detection (D) –how likely is the failure to be detected before it reaches the customer?

•Is defined as how frequently the specific failure cause is projected to occur and result in the “failure mode”.

Is typically defined as an assessment of the seriousness of the potential “end effects,” and assessed independent of the causes.

Detection

Sometimes called Detectability, has no standard definition.
There is some confusion surrounding this index, since different definitions exist for this term.
If the team does not have a good understanding of this index, we recommend using a value of “1” for all fields and the team can fill it in later if time permits.
